Question

Gloria These remarkable tapes from 1964 feature “Gloria,” a young, divorced mother who consented to be videotaped for three half-hour sessions while working with the founders of three therapies: Person-Centered Therapy (Carl Rogers), Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (Albert Ellis), and Gestalt Therapy (Fritz Perls). Prior to each session, each psychotherapist gives an overview of his type of therapy. It is an excellent way to demonstrate how dramatically different these treatments are and to stimulate a discussion about what constitutes an effective treatment modality. Please watch one or more of these videos and then write a report on them for a class project. These films may exist in the school library. Students can also find them on YouTube here (please preview the links before your class to ensure reliability): Carl Rogers and Gloria: Part One: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBkUqcqRChg (9:07) Part Two: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m30jsZx_Ngs&list=PL470AE86F9C44A5D4 (9:57) Part Three: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RX_Y3zUPzEo (9:47) Part Four: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHxl5NtcDow (10:00) Part Five: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L19nXMvbS8E (7:34) Fritz Perls and Gloria: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lKXTLFVZJc (29:31) Albert Ellis and Gloria: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xFfdshNKYk (29:49) Instructions for students: After you have viewed one or more of these videos, consider the following questions and write a two- to three-page report based on your responses: Did you learn anything new about any of these modalities? If so, what? What specific techniques did you observe? Give examples. Which technique did you think was most effective? Why? If you were to choose one of these psychologists to be your therapist, who would you choose and why?

Explanation / Answer

The client centered therapy session had such a calm warming situation. Carl Rogers is constantly reflecting and summarizing what Gloria has been saying throughout the session. He focuses on her nonverbal cues from the shiver in her body to her hesitancy in her voice.

Which technique did you think was most effective? Why? If you were to choose one of these psychologists to be your therapist, who would you choose and why?

Given it’s a situation of,

“ I should be loved and accepted by my children and myself always”,

I feel both Albert Ellis’ approach caters to the need as well. It’s a more confronting cognitive style of dealing with the same issue. Its also so much more active in working towards the goal.

I honestly am conflicted between rogers and ellis cause I enjoyed both their ways of dealing and although I’d love a blend of the two yet I feel independently they would both be effective for me. The style of challenging my thinking in Ellis’ approach is something that appeals to me but the acceptance in roger’s approach definitely make me more comfortable and less defensive.
