Child development is a foundation for community development and economic development because children are our future. Children cannot advocate for themselves, and because their mental health needs and developmental issues differ distinctly from those of adults, it is important that we keep those concerns in mind. From what I have read in our textbook, I believe that early detection/intervention can lead to improved diagnosis and treatment. Early intervention is important for children and young people, for whom mental illness can have profound, long-term consequences. Early detection of children’s mental health issues can also effectively change the course and direction of their development. This would give parents the chance to seek out the most appropriate help for their child.  Therapeutic family support can aid parents in their efforts to increase protective factors in their child’s life. Families who find effective resolutions for their child’s mental health challenges early, may reduce the likelihood of negative effects (Kidsmentalhealth, 2009. Catching and treating these problems early can stop their progression into adult mental health disorders, which are both more problematic and costly to treat. Children’s normal development may be put in jeopardy because of risk factors, which can include acute, stressful situations and chronic adversity. Children’s resilience is connected to a protective triad of resources and health promoting events that include individual opportunities, close family ties, and opportunities for individual and family support from community resources often called protective factors. Some children seem to be more resilient in the face of risk factors. Resiliency is related to strong self-confidence, coping skills, and the ability to avoid risk situations, as well as the ability to fight off or recover from misfortune. many, if not most, lifetime psychiatric disorders will first appear in child- hood or adolescence” (Costello, Egger, & Angold, 2005a p. 972, Kessler et al., 2009). This will do more harm than good because we know that the brain shows neural plasticity throughout the course of development enabling us to change our thoughts and behaviors. If caught early it can help children live and lead a more productive life without more suffering (Mash & Wolfe, 2016).

What are some ethical concerns?

Obtaining both the informed consent of the parents or other legal guardian acting for the child and the assent of the child. Ensuring that participants are not pressured and/or coerced to participate. Keeping participants confidentiality and anonymity.

By using the BCI board and getting approval for your research you can ensure that the study is done using nonharmful procedures that the benefits outweigh the risks; also ensuring that you are sensitive to ethical and have ethical integrity (Mash & Wolfe, 2016).

Also discuss factors that make understanding abnormal child behavior so complex and sometimes contradictory.

Factors that make it hard to understand to begin with is just defining abnormal behavior. Our history of understanding abnormal child behavior has come a long way but is still hard to understand. There are so many theories and models. Each address different aspects and you have to fit them all together because the cause and solution is always multifaceted and interactive. No single integrative theory fully captures the diversity of perspectives and findings represented by current research in abnormal child psychology. I find sometimes it is hard to identify the complex features associated with patterns of abnormal behavior and the extent to which children achieve developmental milestones. There are many contributors to sort out. Contributors vary among individuals who have the disorder. Individuals with the same specific disorder express the features of their disturbance in different ways (e.g., some children with a conduct disorder are aggressive, whereas others may be destructive to property or engage in theft or deceit). The pathways leading to any particular disorder are numerous and interactive, as opposed to unidimensional and static.

Explanation / Answer

Ethical considerations play a very crucial role in undergoing any therapeutic process.

There are many pre-defined ethical considerations which are supposed to be taken care of in the practice. In the practical therapeutic process we do face many problems where the question of following those ethics rises.

This can happen in various situations where it becomes extremely difficult for a therapist to follow the ethics and a big dilemma situation arises.

For example:

When a therapist knows there is a problem with the child n he/ she has been referred to the therapist but the parents or the guardians do not give their consent.

In the case of confidentiality, therapists are not supposed to disclose the information discussed with them but many a times, the nature of information is such that the therapist is in a dilemma of how to convey the information which is actually very important as it concerns the child especially.

The information legal in nature is also supposed to be disclosed but the problem of breaking the confidentiality arises on the therapists part as there is no or less consent of the client and the family which is also a really big challenge faced by the therapists.

For the research purposes too, even if we have the approval still it becomes really difficult to get the consent of the participants whom we want to include in the research and also there are dropout rates as well.

Thus, it becomes a very big challange to always follow the ethical considerartions rigorously.
