I think mental health intervention in children offer more benefit than harm to school-aged children because having early detection will help diagnosis a child’s disorder. An article called Importance of early detection for mental health issues says, “ Intervening early can interrupt the negative course of some mental illnesses and in some cases, may lessen long-term disability. Recent developments on the brain indicates that longer periods of maladaptive and dysfunctional thoughts and behavior have cumulative effects and, can influence the capacity for recovery”(“Importance of early detection for mental health issues”). The article also says “Since children develop rapidly, delivering mental health services early is necessary to avoid permanent consequences and to ensure that children are ready for school and their upcoming adult life”(“Importance of early detection for mental health issues”).

An ethical concern is when diagnosing and giving treatment to children with mental health issues some countries don’t have the possibility to get health services. Another ethical concern can be the different way of diagnosing can be different in other countries. Another concern can be using medicine to treat patients, instead of giving therapy, sometimes that can go against a countries ethics. Some countries don’t believe that medicine can cure a person and that there should be a way to not use medicine. An article called Mental health in children and adolescents says “Both pharmacological and non pharmacological treatments can reduce the severity of the symptoms of emotional their overall functioning in life, but there are differences in which treatment people value”(Erik Parens and Josephine Johnston).

An important factor when trying to understand a child with abnormal disorder, we need to first understand their abnormal behavior. There may be lots of theories about how to understand a child with abnormal behavior, but we may have to put lots of theories together to find a solution. I think it may be hard to diagnosis a child with abnormal behavior because there going through a lot of steps in their life and its hard to figure out the problem.

Explanation / Answer

I donot agree with the thought that it may be hard to diagnose child with abnormal behaviors. Though there are lots of theories to understand child with abnormal behavior and similarly there are quite a few different approaches to treatment of child with abnormal behaviors. The trained clinicians (clinical psychologists and psychiatrists) learn to diagnose the abnormal behavior based upon the behavior symptoms. There are two seperate systems of diagnosis called DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual) primaril used by clinical psychologists and ICD (Internaitonal classificaiton of discease which is primarily used by psychiatrist while dignosing chilren with abnormal behaviors. Both of these manuals provide very clear and systematic guidelines to classify the seeming many different kinds of manifested behavioral abnormalities into a few catgories of clinical signs and symptoms. There is also guideline for judging the intensity of disorder based upon the nubmer and frequency of symptoms. Therefore with adequate training it is quite a routine business of clinical psyhcologist and psychiatrists to diagnose a disorder based upon behavioral abnormalities. Similarly after diagnosis there are prescribed guidelines in other relevant texts for bot pharmacological and non-pharmacoligical treatment models to chosen.
