Question

Decide which of the following concepts are most applicable to each scenario: differential reinforcement of other behavior, avoidance contingency, punishment by prevention of reinforcer, punishment by loss of reinforcer, or avoidance of loss.

Defend your answer 175 words each, using citations as needed.

Sally makes the 7th-grade track team by finishing before another girl by less than 0.05 seconds in her event—the 400-meter relay. Sally is proud of making the team but needs to work harder in the practices that follow. The first track meet does not go well. Out of the four girls on the relay team, she has the slowest time, so her track coach removes her from the team, and makes her sit as an alternate.

Explanation / Answer

The best concept applicable to this scenario is Punishment by loss of reinforcer.

Sally is rewarded by positive reinforcer when she gets selected in the event. Her efforts and hard work pays and she is proud of it.But this reward makes her a bit sloppy and she doesn't work hard that was needed and eventually she has the slowest time on track compared to the other four girls. So her coach punishes her by removing from her team,to ensure that she works hard to achieve the expected task of getting selected, to motivate Sally to put all her efforts and work hard for the coming event. Here the coach has used negative punishment that is taking off the privilege of selection for the event from Sally so as to make her value the hard work.According to Malott and Shane (2014)"This is a form of punishment-punishment by loss of reinforcer (negative punishment)".(p.80).
