Question

Decide which of the following concepts are most applicable to each scenario: differential reinforcement of other behavior, avoidance contingency, punishment by prevention of reinforcer, punishment by loss of reinforcer, or avoidance of loss.

Defend your answer 175 words each, using citations as needed.

Sally, a 13-year-old teenager, is tired of having her mom nag her about her bedroom. Her mom nags about the clothes on the floor, the bed being unmade, and the trashcan spilling over in her bathroom. Sally comes home from school in a bad mood and the last thing she wants to hear is her mom’s nagging voice. To get around the expected response from her mom, she cleans her room, makes her bed, and empties her trashcan.

I would not like a response from Nagarajan (this person just copies and pastes response from the internet, something I can do myself)

Explanation / Answer

Sally has been constantly hammered with her mother's nagging in the smallest of the things. Her mom attempts to keep her disciplined by scolding her, but when that gets over the line, it becomes nagging, as in the case of sally. In the given case scenario, sally has returned from her school, and she seems upset about something. With an already upset mood, she doesn't want to further find any kind of distress, which is an expected behaviour of her mother. Hence, in an avoidance attempt, she does all the assigned tasks preemptively. This kind of a behaviour can be named as avoidance contingency.

Avoidance contingency can be defined as a situation in which an individual can act or carry out activities such that any stimulus that is aversive in nature ( stimulus in which an individual is uncomfortable or that is painful to the individual, that requires to be avoided ), can be refrained from.
