arks Window Help llearn.Iacod.edu Results Topic: Discussion It: "First Two ccording to our text (chapter 6), scientists have discovered (based on equipment like the fMRI) that "Babies are thinking long before they talk. hould these findings have an impact on our behavior with regard to our own personal behavior, interactions with others or our interaction with babies? How would you go about explaining to parents, family members and care givers the importance of these findings? Can you name a few examples of behaviors that have an impact on the development of babies that caregivers may not automatically recognize? 'Hint: In our text there have been several examples of behaviors on the part of caregivers that can impact child development."

Explanation / Answer

Answer 1) The finding that babies are thinking before they talk would have the greatest impact on adults' interactions with babies. Babies are continuously perceiving the world around them and learn many things by imitating adults. Therefore, it is imperative to monitor our direct interactions wilth babies to ensure that they learn appropriate behavior by imitating good role models. The aforementioned finding influences our personal behavior and behavior with others in an indirect way. By regulating and monitoring our behavior, it is possible for us to make changes in our thoughts and behavior that might, in other circumstances, affect our interactions with babies. For example, toddlers might be able to sense others' feelings - it might be necessary to modify our interactions with ourselves and others to keep up a positive image when interacting with a baby. This would help ensure that the baby learns positive behavior.

Answer 2) Explain that the processes of thinking are going on the baby's mind - it's just that we cannot directly hear what they think as babies have not yet developed the ability to articulate their thoughts. Just because we cannot hear these thoughts, does not mean that they are not there. We can infer from their behavior, e.g. during play, that the process of thinking is taking place.

Answer 3) Technology might have a tremendous impact on babies. Constantly allowing babies to play on the phone might impair the development of their eyesight, reduce their attention span, cause irritability or even addiction. This is still a new field and research in this area is still evolving. Another example is having negative emotions in front of babies. Studies have shown that babies can, in many cases, sense their mother's mood. A prolonged negative mood may influence the baby's mood or impact the baby in ways that might manifest later on. Lastly, consider eye contact. Today's parents are very busy - there is always too much to do and too little time. This, combined with technology, led researchers to believe that eye contact between a baby and the primary caregiver is on the decline. Researchers have hypothesized that eye contact between the baby and the promary caregiver is necessary for the normal development of the baby. Not many are aware of this.
