Question

How does tDCS work?

From a study participants’ point of view, what parts of the experience of participating in an tDCS study are unpleasant?

What are the important safety considerations (to people and objects) when conducting, or selecting participants for an tDCSC study?

Who should not participate in an tDCS study?

For fun, go to Amazon and search for tDCS. What do sellers say about the benefits of tDCS? (Note: many things sold on Amazon don’t do what they claim. Take the purported benefit claims with a big grain of salt!)

Explanation / Answer

1. tDCS is acronymn for Transcranial direct current stimulation. It is a painless brain stimulation treatment that uses direct electrical currents to stimulate specific parts of the brain.

Working: It works by applying a positive (anodal) or negative (cathodal) current via electrodes to an area, which will cause the depolarization or hyperpolarization of neurons. The positioning of the anode and cathode electrodes is used to influence how current flows, and where in the brain it does.

2. Some unpleasent experience with tDCS includes a slightly metallic taste, and occasional redness at the site of the electrodes.
