Listening Communication Assignment
1. USE S.M.A.R.T. TO SOLVE
2. Identify the problem in your listening by figuring out what behavior you exhibit that creates the challenges.
3. Think about why you exhibit that behavior.
4. What is the goal to improve listening with regard to that behavior? Decrease it? Replace it? Eliminate it?
5. What behavior should you be doing to help minimize that yucky one?
6. What behavior will you count to know how often you are doing it or how will you measure how well you are doing it?
7. Have you asked a reasonable amount of work and concentration of yourself? Are you pushing yourself a little but not too much? Do you have the resources to accomplish this goal? (Achievable and Realistic) ______________________
So you could use a template like this: By October 31, I will be able to ___________ by this much ____________as measured by _____________. I will track my progress by ____________.
Explanation / Answer
2. A challenge to active listening could be my tendency to cut people off while they are speaking in order to get my point across.
3. This probably happens because when a person speaks (and I'm not too comfortable with them), I am usually thinking about what I should be saying next.
4. My goal would be to focus solely on the person's words without internally thinking about what to say next. Thus my behavior of cutting people off during a conversation should be replaced.
5. I would like to replace this behavior by using more verbal and non-verbal encouragers in the conversation (like paraphrasing, nodding my head, eye-contact etc.)
6. I would, over a week's time, try to keep a mental track of how many times I have successfully been able to not interrupt people when they are talking.
7. I do believe that this goal is very do-able.
