Question
Determine whether the following arguments are best classified as being deductive or inductive.
Every horse can run a mile in under 3 minutes. Evie has a pet that can run a mile in under 3 minutes. Therefore, Evie's pet is a horse.
It is stated that Deductive arguments are ones that "under the assumption that the premises are true it is impossible for the conclusions to be false". My intuition tells me that the answer to this question is inductive but I searched up the answer online, where it told me that this argument is deductive. Can someone clarify this for me?
Thanks
Explanation / Answer
Ans :
There is always two possibilities for whether the arguement is inductive or deductive .
If in the arguement premises make the conclusion probable , it is inductive . The premises provide the reasons for the conclusion to hold true.
But if in the arguement conclusion follows necessarily from the premises , then it is deductive.
Here if you see the premises quoted a fact about horse , and the conclusion followed the premises that the Evie's pet is horse . So the arguement is deductive.
