Question
For this question, think about primary and secondary appraisal (from the lecture) and Albert Ellis' RET approach, in chapter 4. 4. Take this stressful situation and describe what your primary and secondary appraisal of it would be. Then describe the ABC's of Ellis' approach using this situation, including possible catastrophic thinking. Then describe how you could change the B aspect to have a better response to this stressful event. You live at home, and you have two younger siblings at home as well. For the most part, your parents are doing OK. Then you mom tells you and your dad that the doctor wants her to undergo some tests for spots on her lung that showed up on an x-ray exam. The doctor also says that the spots could be cancer. Your dad starts to get upset, he is frightened and angry. Your mom starts to cry and says she doesn't know what to do. As you try not to panic, you think about your younger siblings and how the family is going to get along since your mom works and also takes care of the house for everyone. Primary appraisal is shock, tension, worry etc.
Secondary appraisal is sense of responsibility and management.
A - The spots on the lungs seen on Mom's x-ray report could be that of cancer.
B - Life is unfair and I cannot stand the situation where I could lose my Mom.
C - Stress, Tension, Worry and Panic.
D - Then getting back into rationality since Mom and Dad both looked shattered it was important to hold me together, because if it is not cancer all is well but if it is nothing except treatment was possible. However, to plan for the treatment we needed to have strong support for each other emotionally and be each other's strength so that we could fight with cancer as a team as if it was diagnosed, it couldn't be changed anyway except through treatment.
E - Getting Calm and Composed, Helping Mom and Dad to realize that Doctor said it could be cancer not that it is "Cancer" and if it is then wouldn't it be better we put all our emotional strength together and get working on the treatment plan because breaking down won't help the treatment of cancer any way.
Changed emotions: Strength, Confidence, Stronger bond, Diligence.
F - Further Action planning the tests to ascertain the diagnosis.
If it's cancer, planning for the treatment and looking at all the possible resources which could be of help at this point of time and seek help to overcome the situation.
Remind ourselves with positive imagery, cancer survivors etc and that things may not always be beyond repair.
