Explanation / Answer
People blind as a result of cortical damage continue to synchronize to sunlight, because visual input still reaches the brain area that controls wakefulness. It is understood that wakefulness is controlled by light entering the hypothalamus (in the brain) which further regulates the circadian rythm in the body. In visually impaired, even though light does not enter the eye per se, visual input still reaches brain areas that control wakefulness. Oral melatonin is also seen to be helpful in maintaining rythm is visually impaired.
