The calcarine sulcus or calcarine fissure is a very important anatomical landmark located on the medial surface of the occipital lobe and divides the visual cortex into two that is the upper portion ( the cuneus gyrus) and a lower part (the lingual gyrus).

The above drawing depicts a coronal view of the calcarine sulcus. The Brodmann area 17 is the primary visual cortex which is located in and on either side of the calcarine sulcus, on the medial surface of the occipital lobe. The regions numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4 represent the primary visual cortex. It's primary function is discerning the intensity, shape, size, and location of objects in the visual field. The primary visual cortex receives visual radiation from the lateral geniculate body of the thalamus. A lesion here in one of the hemispheres causes blindness in the opposite visual field.
