Explain the assumptions that Maslow's need hierarchy and ERG theory make about human motivation? How can managers use these theories to motivate associates? How do 'need for achievement', 'need for affiliation' and 'need for power' differ? How do these needs relate to work performance and motivation? How would you distinguish McClelland's notion of needs from those of the other content theorists? Which of the three theories do you think provides the most useful and realistic explanation for human development and motivation? Why?Explanation / Answer
Maslow's Assumptions in Hierarchy of Needs Theory are :-
1. Man is a needing being, i.e. his needs are developing constantly notwithstanding when a few needs are fulfilled. Human needs are of changed and differentiated nature. They can be orchestrated in a chain of command of significance advancing from a lower to a higher request of requirements.
2. Requirements have a distinct progressive system of significance. When needs on a lower level are satisfied, those on the following level will rise and request fulfillment. This proposes bread (nourishment) is basic and is an essential need of each person. As indicated by Maslow, "Man lives by bread alone when there is no bread. Maslow, in his hypothesis, has alluded to various needs and proposed that consideration should be given to every single such need as regard for physiological needs alone isn't satisfactory for inspiring workers. As indicated by Maslow, "Man does not live by bread alone". This decision of Maslow is a useful reality and should be given satisfactory consideration while inspiring workers.
3. A fulfilled need does not go about as a helper.
4. As one need is fulfilled, another replaces it.
ERG theory:
Alderfer recategorized Maslow's theory into three less complex and more extensive classes of necesseties:
Existence needs-These incorporate requirement for fundamental material necessities. To put it plainly, it incorporates a person's physiological and physical security needs.
Relatedness needs-These incorporate the yearning person's have for keeping up critical relational connections (be it with family, companions or bosses), getting open notoriety and acknowledgment. Maslow's social needs and outside segment of regard needs fall under this class of need.
Growth needs-These incorporate requirement for self-improvement and self-awareness and progression. Maslow's self-realization needs and inherent segment of regard needs fall under this classification of need.
Erg theory helpful in organization : Managers must comprehend that an employee has different requirements that must be fulfilled in the meantime. As indicated by the ERG hypothesis, if the chief focuses exclusively on one need at any given moment, this won't successfully spur the worker. Likewise, the dissatisfaction relapse part of ERG Theory has an additional impact on work environment inspiration. For example if a representative isn't given development and progression openings in an association, he may return to the relatedness need, for example, mingling needs and to meet those mingling needs, if nature or conditions don't allow, he may return to the requirement for cash to satisfy those mingling needs. The sooner the chief acknowledges and finds this, the more quick advances they will take to satisfy those necessities which are baffled until such time that the worker can again seek after developmen
>The need for achievement is most noteworthy for those people who want to exceed expectations. Achievers look for neither power nor endorsement; rather, their exclusive concentrate is on progress.
>Those with a high need for power look for understanding and consistence; endorsement and acknowledgment are not of their worry. Supervisors of energy searchers ought to furnish them with a chance to oversee others.
>Being enjoyed by others is the principle objective of individuals with a High need for affiliation .Affiliation searchers are more intrigued by endorsement instead of acknowledgment or control and will therefore act in routes in which they accept will acquire the underwriting of others. They likewise have a tendency to maintain a strategic distance from strife with others no matter what. Affiliance searchers want to work in gatherings and cheerfully fit in with the standards of the gathering.
