'11 T-Mobile 11:30 AM bbhosted.cuny.edu 63% In "All Labor Has Dignity," MLK Jr says: "Now our struggle is for genuine equality, which means economic equality. For we know now that it isn't enough to integrate lunch counters. What does it profit a man to be able to eat at an integrated lunch counter if he doesn't earn enough money to buy a hamburger and a cup of coffee?" (MLK Jr, 249). Du Bois makes a similar criticism of educational inequality in "Meaning of Progress," in pointing out that "separate but equal" segregated education is only "equal" as the resources of a school are. In a sense, we can see both authors as saying that equality is determined the circumstances in which one lives; equality is an assessment of how we live compared to others, rather than an abstract right that we have. They make clear in concrete cases what Dewey points out abstractly: that solving social problems requires focusing on "the possibilities of existing conditions," rather than generalities and abstractions (JD, 122). Choose one of the following: If you agree, make an argument to justify your position: is political equality really just an ideal without socioeconomic equality? Come up with an example of your own that supports your position. If you disagree, make an argument to justify your position: Where does the argument above go wrong!? Come up with an example of your own that supports your position, or undercuts the argument above. Make sure you explain the full MLK Jr case study, and how JD thinks we should go about solving social problems passage, Du Bois's . I mentioned early on in the class that the question under consideration was what notion of individuality is best for us to hold in order to have a successful democracy, which w

Explanation / Answer

Answer-1- Yes I agree because economic equality and educational equality are two important factors of the development of human beings. Equality is based on the circumstances and surroundings of people where they live. So its important to make people socially equal on the basis of their living standards, norms and traits.

Political equality has no meaning without socioeconomic equality. Political equality relates directly to a democracy. Political equality can also be expressed by civic freedom like freedom of expression, association, assembly and movement. According to the theory of political equality each citizen is able to take part in all activities equally. But when there is socio-economically unequal society, some citizens do not have the access to reach to the political institutions. So we can say that political equality is meaningless until there is no equality in socio- economic conditions. According to De Cleyre," Humanity can not be made equal by declarations on paper, unless the material conditions for equality exist, it is worse than mockry to pronounce us equal."

For example if a person is not educated and does not know the constitutional rights of a citizen than he would not be able to reach any political organisation in case of any problem.

Answer-2- According to MLK Jr. now we need socio-economic equality in our society. He said that all people are not economically equal, some are very rich while other are so poor that they dont have enough money to earn their bread. Some criticisms about educational inequality is done by Du. Bois. He said that education system is similar in the form of schools only but all children do not get the opportunity to go to the school. According to both of them equality is determined by our social conditions, by the society in which we live. They focussed on solving social problems by solving the existing conditions which create them. Existing conditions are more important for socio-economic equality rather than paying attention on generalities and abstractions.
