Despite the criticism that Freud’s theory has received, it has endured for so long primarily because it is the only theory that taken into consideration the effect of unconscious forces on personality. This approach towards the human mind, although difficult to observe and test, is important as the existence of the unconscious mind itself has been adequately demonstrated. Also, Freud was among the first theorists who produced such an extensive body of work on human psychology, contributing to the foundation on which the modern discipline has been built. His theories also have a historical significance has his work gave rise to counter theories of personality.
