Explanation / Answer
Behavioural attributions that made made through Locus is referred to as the ‘locus of control’. In particular, it refers to the degree to which individuals believe that they have control over the outcome of events in their lives. An individual’s “loci” can be either internal, leading to to belief that their lives are under their own control, or external, which leads to the belief that outside forces control their lives and they themselves have little or no influence over it.
Individuals differ in terms to have an internal or external locus of control. Those with a strong internal locus of control will believe that their hard work will result in positive results, as they believe that their actions has a direct impact on their future consequences. For instance, a student with an internal locus of control would accept that he failed his examination because he did not study well for it. Hence we would then work harder to perform better next time.
On the other hand, those with a strong external locus of control assign blame to others for their own life events as they tend to attribute future consequences to factors such as fate, luck, destiny, authoritative figures, or complex universal forces. Using the same example above, a student with an external locus of control would probably blame the question paper being unfairly set a high difficulty level as the cause of his failure.
