Question

For each of these scenarios, think of a study that might test the hypothesis. List whether the independent variable should be a between subjects factor or within subjects factor and why. 1. A neuroscientist hypothesizes that damage to the primary visual cortex is permanent in older adults. 2. A social psychologist believes people will solve problems more creatively when in groups than when alone. 3. A cognitive psychologist hypothesizes that spaced practice of verbal information will lead to a greater retention than massed practice. 4. An industrial psychologist predicts that worker productivity will increase if the company introduces flextime scheduling (i.e. work 8 hours but start and end at different times).

Explanation / Answer

1) A neuroscientist hypothesis that damage to the primary visual cortex is permanent in older adults can be done in a clinical setting. The experiment is applicable within older adults as his study relates to the effect of visual cortex as they get older. Here the hypothesis is compared with the same subjects under several different types of teatments. The degree of damage may vary according to the age factor and factors contributing to it.The extent of damage will be the dependant variable. The independant variable is within the subjects.

2) A social psychologist theory is people solve problems more creatively when in a group than when alone. This is an assumption. Here two groups of subjects are there.A comparative study is done here.A creative activity can be given to an individual and the same activity repeated with a groupThe outcome can be measured to test the hypothesis.

3) A cognitive psychologist believes that spaced practice of verbal information will lead to greater retention than massed practice. Here two types of coginitive exercises are used to test retention and are given to the same subjects. The exercise is the independant variable and retention capacity will be the dependant variable as it depends on the independant variable.

4) An industrial psychologist predicts that work productivity will increase if the company introduces flextime scheduling. This is again an assumption. He has to compare the productivity of workers at the present schedule and change the work schedule to check the productivity , the subjects will be the workers in the industry. He can compare this using the same subjects by dividing them into two groups and giving different schedules. The independant variable is the time schedule and this is tested between the subjects divided into groups.
