Question

For each of these researcher's projects, identify which describes mediation and which describes moderation. Explain why in one sentence, identifying which is the IV, which is the DV, and which variable is the mediator/moderator. a. Marty knows there is a strong positive correlation between the number of books visible in a family's home and the academic performance of teens raised in that home (high school GPA; ACT scores). Marty does not believe there is something magical about the books, rather it is likely that the books show that the parents spend more team reading to their children as they grow up. b. Eleanor believes that giving rewards (bonus pay, prizes) to employees will motivate them to be more productive, but only for tasks that are very simple and clear cut. For tasks involving creativity, those rewards can actually distract employees and hurt their performance. To test this she measures the value of the rewards (in dollar amount), task clarity (10 point scale from entirely creative to entirely well-defined), and productivity (performance ratings from supervisors on a scale from 1 to 10).

Explanation / Answer

(a)

Here the IV is the number of books visible, and the DV is the academic performance.

The third variable, which can be named as the parent-children time spending, is the mediator, as it explains the reason for good academic results. It's not a moderator though, because it has no effect on the nature of relationship between IV and DV

(b)

Here the IV is the rewards value, and the DV is the productivity.

The other variable remaining, task clarity, is the moderator, because here the task clarity has a direct effect on the nature of relationship between IV and DV. For instance, a simple task will show a strong linear relation, while a complex task might not.
