Question
Unfortunately, I do believe that if you were to be certain that if you took another's life, yours would be ended as well, would be a deterrent for this ultimate crime. But a deterrent for those who may be mentally fit.
Unfortunately again, many lives are taken by those who are mentally unfit. The problem then becomes, how do we punish those who kill another and are proven to be mentally unfit? Death penalty for them also?
I feel that those individuals who have not been deterred from murdering because they knew that their lives would be ended, as well, should not be put to death, but removed from society completely and for a very extended time.
Explanation / Answer
As long as a mentally ill passes the reality test; the convict should be held responsible and punished. This provides a closure to the victim’s family, who had suffered so much. This will act as a deterrent that mental illness is different from insanity and hence not an excuse for murder.
