Question
Unfortunately, not every negotiation or conflict ends with the parties shaking hands or hugging. For a variety of reasons, negotiations stall or fail. For example: Bob meets with his boss Amy to discuss getting a raise. While Amy acknowledges that Bob is an excellent employee and deserves a raise, she is unable to give him a raise due to budget issues. Bob understands the budget problem; however, he knows that some employees were able to get raises within the last 6 months and feels that Amy did not plan ahead for the budget shortfall. He leaves her office frustrated without a resolution. Based on the above example, or one from your personal/professional life, can a relationship be repaired after a failed negotiation? Why or Why not? What advice, based on the materials from this week, would you give to the parties of a failed negotiation that want to repair it?
Explanation / Answer
Yes, a relationship can be repaired after a failed negotiation because I feel that in the professional career such issue are quite common and individuals will experience such issues working in an organization where the person will feel that he or she has been deprived of what they deserve but the person also needs to understand that there are some guidelines and limitations which needs to be considered even by the manager hence there should be mutual understanding in some cases which will maintain the healthy relationship. Relationships can be repaired too if future promises are made but in this case one of the entities need to take the initiative of initiating the future prospect.
If a negotiation fails the parties should not considered this as the end of the relationship because there are various limitations the parties may possess which restricted them to go a step forward and make the negotiation successful. Hence both the parties should take such incidents professionally without any personal grudge and keep an open mind regarding the instance so that in future if there is an opportunity none of the parties should hesitate. The objective is to serve the mutual interest and the focus should be on that and not on any past experiences.
