Question

Hi, True or false : 1. No neurons are capable of regeneration via cell division once a person is about two years of age. 2. A neuron has enough potassium ions to generate about ten action potentials if the NA/K pumps were to stop working 3. Viscerosensory input is sent directly to the thalamus

Explanation / Answer

1. The neuron or it is also called as the nerve cell is defined as a cell which carries electrical impulses. These are the basic part of the nervous system and important part of the of the brain. The human brain development takes place in the third gestational period along with the neuronal differentiation of neural progeniter cells. By age 6 years the complete development of the brain and the nervous system that is 90% can be seen. Hence the statement is true in age 2 years no neurons are capable off regeneration via cell division in a person of that age the neuronal differentiation takes place.

2) The neuron has enough potassium ions to generate about ten action potentials if the NA/K pumps were to stop working is a false statement because, the action potential that is generated passes through the potassium channel to stay open and continue to let positive ions exit the neuron. In the nerve cell the pump is used to generate gradients of both potassium and sodium ions. These gradient is used to propogate the electrical signals along the neurons.

3) True that the viscerosensory input is sent directly to the thalamus. The viserosensory input from the NTS nucleus of the solitary tract to the viscetosensory nuclei of the thalamus and also to the insular cortex.
