1. Cardiovascular, Digestive, Respiratory and Excretory systems are all integrated in their functions in order to maintain homeostasis. What is the common component that must be considered in the function of the digestive, respiratory and excretory systems ?
2. In the body's systems above, there is usually a transport component and a component where the main purpose of the organ system takes place. For example, blood has to be transported via veins and arteries, but exchange takes place in the capillaries. Name as many other examples as you can think of within these systems.
3. How does each system work? What are the general mechanisms (for example, enzymatic action, mechanical action, diffusion, active/passive transport, osmosis, receptor-mediated actions, etc.)?
4. What are some ways the systems can malfunction? Or in other words, how can the systems differ from their normal function? And what is done to fix it?
Explanation / Answer
1) blood is the common component.
Blood in arteries go to the tissues and provide oxygen and the carbon dioxide is taken back in the veins by the blood. Which goes to the hurt and then to the lungs where the blood is purified by the lungs. Also, in the excretory system Blood that circulates through the body passes through one of the two kidneys. Urea, uric acid, and water are removed from the blood and most of the water is put back into the system. In the digestive system, in the intestine the nutrients are absorbed in the blood.
Answer 2) in the digestive system the food goes from the mouth through esophagus and into the stomach and then to the intestines. But the nutrients are absorbed in the intestine.
Answer 3) cardiovascular system - this is the system which consist of heart and vessels and lungs.
The veins collect the deoxygenated blood to the right atrium which then goes to right ventricle and then to the lungs via pulmonary artery. There the blood gets purified then the oxygenated blood through the pulmonary vein comes to the left atrium which then goes to left ventricles which then goes to the whole body. This is how the cycle continues.
Respiratory system - we breathe in oxygen, this goes to the lungs. In the alveoli of lungs the gas exchange takes place, CO2 comes out of blood and oxygen diffuses.
Digestive system- digestion starts in the mouth only with salivary amylase acting on the carbohydrates. It then goes to the stomach through esophagus.
There it is acted upon by acids and enzymes breaking it down. Then it passes on to intestines and acted upon certain excretions by liver and pancrease. And the nutrients are absorbed in the intestine. The unabsorbed food comes out of the body.
Excretory system- the blood is purified in the kidneys . There the Urea, uric acid, and water are removed from the blood and most of the water is put back into the system.
answer 4) digestive system can malfunction as abdominal pain, blood in the stool, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, incontinence, nausea and vomiting and difficulty swallowing
Resporatory system can malfunction as difficulty in breathing, sputum presence, etc
