c. increase; basic vitamin C

d. decrease; basic vitamin C

Explanation / Answer

Answer 1. The mechanisms that account for that change in flow rate for those who drunk the Gatorade:- When someone drink gatorade, the liquid will stay in the body longer, giving it more time to get absorbed. Gatorade group will have higher urine flow rates than the non-drinking group.

Gatorade actually had the highest urine flow rate, and the lowest urine specific gravity instead. With the Gatorade drinking group, initially their plasma osmolarity and blood pressure are high and the change in osmolarity will cause osmo receptors to release ADH in the posterior pituitary gland causing an increase in water reabsorption by the increased aquaporins. With an increase in aquaporins the Gatorade started to act like water, and increase blood pressure and blood volume along with decreasing the plasma osmolarity.

Answer 2. Why would you expect tea to increase the flow rate compated to water:- Because the caffein in the tea acts as a diuretic.

Answer 3. a) Increase; acidic vitamin C
