Question

Your patient has suffered a CVA (cerebral vascular accident) also known as a stroke. Damage to the left hemisphere was the primary effect. Considering the lobes of the brain and lateralization, answer the following questions:

1. Is there a difference between the areas and/or lobes of the cerebrum considering function?

2. Would speech be affected with damage to the left hemisphere? Why or why not. Be sure to detail your answer.

3. Describe the arterial supply of the cerebrum. Which blood vessel might be the culprit in the damage to the left hemisphere ?

Explanation / Answer

1. Yes there is difference in function of 4 lobes of cerebrum. E.g. frontal lobe is associated with thinking and emotional regulations, parietal lobe is associated with eye function like visual perception , temporal lobe is associated with the functioning of ear that is hearing, occipital lobe is also associated with the ear functioning.

2. Brain is divided into two part that right and left brain. Left brain important function is to control and coordinate with right one. Here visual function is associated with right one but to perform it left also required. Speech is also controlled by left side hemisphere hence speech is also affected with the damage to left hemisphere.

3. There is a continuous blood supply to brain because it can't store the glucose. Glucose, oxygeted blood is supply via internal carotid artery and vertebral artery. Middle cerebral artery, posterior artery also play major role to perform this function.

Internal carotid artery is the main blood supply as well as anterior cerebral artery may also get affected with the damage of left hemisphere.
