stress fractures can be defined as the fractures which do not occur from any exclusive injury but due to repeated stress or injury to a bone. Stress fractures are a result of repeated fatigue or trauma on aweight bearing bone. Due to this mechanism ballet dancers are prone or at a risk to develop stress fractur of weight bearin bones of lowr limb like tibia, navicular and metatarsals.
Women are at agreater risk to develop stress fractures due to osteoporosis, calcium deficiency.
Symptoms of stress fractures are pain and tenderness at the site of fracture. Commonly, these symtoms go away with rest.
prevention of stress fractures:
strengthen the weight bearing bones and muscles through proper strengthening exercises using resistance band
increase dietary intake of calcium and vitamin D
do not over stress or over exhaust your bones
start with proper warm up
follow proper stretching and flexibility exercise programme for muscles
wear shock absorption form and other muscle supporting splints.
