Question
1.A 45-year-old male name Ricardo Bowman went to his doctor for annual checkup. Although he is somewhat overweight, his laboratory results indicated that both his cholesterol and HDL cholesterol were within normal limits. His other laboratory results were:
Plasma fibrinogen = 475 mg/dl (reference range: 145-348 mg/dl)
Hs-CRP = 3.8 mg/dl (reference range: <3 mg/dl)
Ricardo’s physical examination was normal, but the physician cautioned him that he might be at risk for a future heart attack. He was counseled to exercise and eat a healthy low-fat diet. Ricardo’s friend told him that as long as his cholesterol is normal, he did not have to worry about anything. Who is correct? Explain your answer.
Explanation / Answer
Even though the cholesterol levels are normal, increased fibrinogen level is a risk factor for Mi. Fibrinogen is a clotting factors present in blood plasma increased level leads to risk of atherosclerosis, thrombosis of blood. Also increased crp levels which is a indicator for inflammation in arteries and heart valves again a risk for future MI. So without exercise and healthy diet there is a risk of Future heart attack for Ricardo. So the Doctor is correct.
