Question
4. In your own words, define Total Peripheral Resistance (TPR). What is the relationship between TPR, MAP, and CO? Write out the equation. Given your calculations of MAP and CO, what is TPR in this case? Is TPR higher, lower, or the same as if Peter were sitting at home watching TV?5. What is the total blood flow in mL/min through all of the systemic arteries? What is the total blood flow in mL/min through all of the pulmonary capillaries? Comparing capillaries and arteries, where is blood velocity (flow rate) slower? AT&T; 6:07 PM
Explanation / Answer
4) The total peripheral resistance (TPR) is defined as the resistance offered by the systemic vascular resistance to blood flow. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) is defined as the average pressure in the systemic arteries during a cardiac cycle. Cardiac output (CO) is the amount of blood pumped by the ventricles of the heart per minute.
The MAP is the product of TPR and CO
MAP = TPR x CO
Cardiac output = heart rate x stroke volume
Heart rate = 60/RR interval = 60/0.47 = 127 per minute
Stroke volume = EDV-ESV = 180-50 = 130 ml
Cardiac output = 130x127 = 16510 ml
Arterioles dilate during exercise.
Thus, the total peripheral resistance (TPR) as well as mean arterial pressure (MAP) will decrease during exercise.
