At the University of Idaho, 208 psychology students were recruited to participate in an experiment on salary negotiation.  Subjects were asked to imagine that they were hiring an administrative assistant and told that they called the candidate back to discuss salary. Subjects were told that the candidate’s current salary for a similar position was $29,000.  The subjects were then informed of the candidate’s responses to a question asking what salary the candidate wanted.  The candidate’s joking response was randomly selected among three possible answers:

High implausible anchor: “I would like $100,000, but really I am just looking for something that is fair.”

Low implausible anchor: “I would work for $1, but really I am just looking for something that is fair.”

Control: “Really, I am just looking for something fair.”

Subjects assigned to the control condition offered a salary of $32,500 on average compared to $35,500 in the “high” condition and $31,500 in the “low” condition.

1. The unit of analysis is the major entity that is ‘what’ ( attitudes, social artefact, behaviour etc.) or ‘ who’ ( individuals, groups or social institutions) is being analyzed in a study. In the given study, the individual’s salary negotiations is the main unit of analysis.
