Explanation / Answer

1. The given statistics needs to be critically reviewed in terms of the context of its emergence and the special interests of the party involved in publicising the study. The organisation in question is ‘Momsacrossamerica’, which is a US based organisation of women to raise awareness about GMOs and initiate campaigns to improve health of American consumers.

Here, the organisation makes a claim about the existence of a positive correlation between toxic exposure to GMO foods and the incidence of death across many developed countries. However, the study is found to have low credibility because of the following points of analysis:

Firstly, when we put the findings of the study to test in terms of the means to which it is being appropriated by the organisation, it is found that the results are misleading as the initial statistics compared the increase GMO use in agriculture with the death rates. However, the organisation falsely cites the study to discuss the neurochemical effects of GMO food on the people such as low Tryptophine and Serotonin which in themselves are not lethal but are used alongside the statistical data on death rates to influence the reader’s attitude against GMO.

secondly, the data was gathered from a study of only middle aged adult males from Developed countries. It therefore does not fully represent the population of all the people across the world and can create false perceptions about her effect of GMOs on women and children. The study is therefore biased in its representation of the population and uses only a small sample of Male adults.

lastly and more importantly, the organisation’s campaign does not give due citation of the primary source and it therefore makes a reviewer doubt the credibility of the findings of the research that is quoted here.
