Motivation and Employee Performance

The one of the most influential factor that has a deep influence on performance of the organization is motivation. Motivating an employee is the most effective policy of the managers which has a positive effect on the management of the jobs among all the employees of the organization. An employee who is quite motivated will always direct his efforts towards the profit of the organization and he is the one who is responsible for meeting the objectives and aims of the organization(Kotherja and Rapti, 2015). If there are no motivated employee in the organization then all the facilities provided by the organization will all be in vain as no one would be there to utilize it effectively. Any business moves forward depending on the factor like motivation and performance of the employees. In fact all the higher officials like managers, supervisors and owners know that for increase in productivity and for a good performance positive motivation is required but sometimes even after knowing this they trust upon many tools that are wrong and indirectly leads to decrease in the productivity and poor performance. An organization can be more effective by increasing the readiness of the employees towards their assigned work which can be achieved by motivating them. The goal of the organization is development of motivation in employees and morale support towards the work assigned to them which can be performed more effectively.

2.2Motivation Defined

Motivation has been defined by many scholars and it is a field which has been studied quite well and it also has its roots in various other fields of academics like as economics, sociology, political science, psychology and education. Society for management of Human Resource (2010) defines motivation as a force that psychologically finds the effort level of the person, its direction along with the diligence of the person while facing any challenge.

It is a rational process of making any decision which affects the diligence and behavior towards the goal and its direction(Moch, 2012). The word motivation can also be defined as the force that psychologically finds the behaviour of the employee towards the organization. It is the power which strengthens the attitude, provides a proper way to the attitude, and initiates them to continue. This explains that to achieve a given target, employees who are quite energetic and have a clear idea about their goals are important.

Motivation can be seen as an internal condition that leads people to act in such a way so that they achieve their given objective. Although it is quite impossible to analyze motivation but it is possible to analyze the external indices of motivation. For example, the procurement of money can be seen as an external motivation, but basically it is an index of intrinsic force to fulfil the basic needs for instance buying food, having a higher status symbol, or acquiring a shelter. Motivation must be confused with the term satisfaction. Motivation is all about the future whereas satisfaction is totally based on past experiences. An employee may be quite satisfied by allowances and benefits provided to them but there can be seen an infinite number of instances where they are not motivated enough to continue their job. Motivation can also be seen as the heart of the management since it is the reason of the behavior of the employees in the organization. Motivation is the intrinsic process that leads to the behavior of employee to satisfy their needs. The process through which people go to fulfil their needs is motivation and their performance(MSi, 2015). Motivation can be defined as the process that psychologically leads to the behavior of employee towards their objective and direction, a predilection to act in a manner such that they can easily achieve their specific unfulfilled needs, an unsatisfied demand and the power to attain it.

For +leading this study, the definition of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has been included. This definition includes the ideas regarding all the possible actions taken by an individual that could make him busy to sort out or to meet his objectives while facing any challenge or problem(Baz, 2016). Adopting this definition leads to making it quite possible to analyze the reasons or actions that changes and force a particular act of an individual to change in a given specific time interval and in given conditions. Now presented below are the different forms of motivation.

2.3 Motivation Forms

Motivation is the force that leads to fulfil the needs and to inspire a person and drives out the natural internal force to perform his job with better performance. A person can be motivated by number of things. There are two forms of motivation- extrinsic and intrinsic. Intrinsic motivation is the internal force that leads a person to do a particular job. It is basically applied by the person on its own. For example showing interest in a project or building a positive image in front of other employees are intrinsic motivation. It is the act of the person without any external force like passion, hunger, selflessness, sense of responsibility and wish to get positive recognition. A person is motivated intrinsically can be observed when there are no superficial reward other than the action(Noermijati and Primasari, 2015). Intrinsic motivation at a high level can be seen by the interest and strong involvement in the project and also by the way people merge their activity showing a perfect synchronization of the complexity of the work along with their skills.

On the other hand an extrinsically motivated person has the behavior such that he work in order to get materialistic rewards or to save himself from the penalties or punishments. This type of motivation begins with its effects only not by the action. The mechanism controlling the behavior can be easily seen in extrinsically motivated behaviors. This is basically the result of the pressure and its consequences are low self-respect. Extrinsically motivated person works in order to get awards like allowances, incentives, bonuses, promotions.

Whether an employee is intrinsically motivated or extrinsically motivated doesn’t matter, as they are motivated to join the organization and give their best efforts to meet its objective by completing projects assigned to them and get the desired outcomes. Here outcomes refer to all that they get in return from the organization. Some of the outcomes like self-sufficiency, sense of responsibility, feeling of achievement and the desire of working in job of their interest and work that they enjoy, also motivate them intrinsically. On the other hand some outcomes like rewards, bonuses, and vacations leads to motivating them extrinsically(Ogunleye and Osekita, 2016).

2.4 Motivation Theories

Theories of motivation focus on the factors that lead to the satisfaction of doing a job. Both types of motivation reflect that many of the theories can be approved in order to understand the motivated behaviour. It focuses on one of the question that what leads drives and control the behaviour of motivated people of being directed towards their goals. An assumption has been made that everybody responds similarly towards the pressures created for motivation and depends on the needs of the person.

The process of motivating someone depends also on the importance of rewards. On the other hand the process theory changes the importance to goals from the needs according to the content theory(Brandes et al., 2003). This theory explains and elaborates that how a person initiates, affirms and leads to satisfy their needs or to eradicate their internal pressures and tensions. It also focuses on the awards that every individual get. Taylor’s theory regarding motivation to do work relates the awards and punishments that are directly related to the performance.
