Question
A researcher conducts a study to determine whether smiling affects students' interest in the course material. In her 8am Physiological Psychology course, she never smiles while teaching. In her 9am Physiological Psychology course, shesmiles often while teaching. At theend of the semester, she gives students a questionnaire to assess the extent to which students liked the course material. The results showed that the 9am class liked the course material more than the 8am class. 5. What is the independent variable? 6. What is the dependent variable? 7. What is the confound? How could the confound be fixed?Explanation / Answer
Independent variable would be smiling of the researcher as she manipulates it in every class. Dependent variable would be the interest of the students in the course material. Confounding variables are any other variable that also has an effect on your dependent variable. So other than smiling, maybe the timing of the class or even the course material itself could influence the students interest.
