Explanation / Answer

Ans 7. (d)

The phonautograph was invented by Frenchman Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville, is the earliest known device for recording sound. It was patented by Scott on March 25, 1857. Scott de Martinville never intended to produce a machine that would playback the recorded sound data. Scott was able to develop the machine after three years of work. Phonautograph consisted of a cone-shaped speaking horn with flexible moving diaphragm connected to his smaller end. This cone gathered the sounds from its vicinity, transferred changing air pressure to the diaphragm which moved the styles that were attached to it. Recording of data was done by connecting moving part of the stylus to the piece of moving paper that was kept on a moving drum and was coated in thin layer of black soot.
