No Case Study The majority of employers have adopted mandatory random drug testing on their employees, arguing that the enormous damage caused by the pervasive use of drugs in our society carries over into the workplace. Typically the tests involve taking urine or blood samples under close observation, thereby raising questions about personal privacy as well as privacy issues about drug use away from the workplace that is revealed by the tests. 5 a. Present and defend your view concerning mandatory drug tests at the workplace. b. How should drug-testing laws be applied in cases where public safety.might be. compromised by an intoxicated person? Joseph Deslardins and Ronald Duska, "Drug Testing in Employment," Business & Professional Ethics Journal 6 (1987): 3-21Explanation / Answer
A. A person under the influence of drugs can never be stable and they are always a threat to the society. If a person is working for a company in a responsible position and still takes drug then it is highly unacceptable. The company hires and considers the employees as the face of the organization. But if the employees are getting involved in these activities then it against the work ethics and they pose a threat to the image of the company in the market. So it is highly important for the companies to have random drug tests to see how true the employees are to their employers. If the problem is huge then the company can take required measures to fix it. Otherwise, this will grow like a tumor and the work culture of the company will be a total mess. The person taking drugs cannot be allowed to be in the work environment where people worry about only their work. The introduction of this kind of environment will destroy the motivation and take the company backward. For the same reason, a lot of multinational companies are taking this seriously and asking their employees to take part in the drug test. They cannot take a risk because the brand image of the company in the market is at stake. This should be followed in every company to create an awareness and also to warn the employees about the consequences of using drugs.
B. Any person who is acting differently in a place where the public is getting disturbed should be arrested and should be taken to a medical center for a drug test immediately. These people will not be in senses and they can be a threat to the public so they should take arrested by the local police. If they are tested positive for the illegal drugs then they should be sent to a government rehabilitation center. If the person is well educated and financially strong then the government should also put them in prison and put a penalty as well to warn others as well of the consequences. If the person is very poor and a drug addict then the rehabilitation center is the best option where they will be taught how to lead a productive life. The possession of the illegal drugs in public should also be considered as a serious offense and the person should be put behind the bars immediately. They should serve some time in jail and also pay a penalty. The police should be able to question the person they find suspicious to know if he is clean. It is the responsibility of the local government and police to maintain a good environment for the general public so this issue should be considered seriously.
