Question

As we observed on the news that most of the news media are biased toward either left or right. Actually, it’s unavoidable that people have different and even opposing views. Internet customers are encouraged to rate the products or services using 5-stars review system. Based on the diversity of people’s viewpoints, do you think it’s a fair system? Why? Read this article http://time.com/money/page/online-reviews-trust-fix/ (July 2016) and provide your views on the effectiveness of the 5-stars review system

Explanation / Answer

In my view, the rating system that currently exists in the internet cannot be be completely trusted. The article describes the tendency for people to give inflated ratings to products and services, which can mislead prospective customers to have expectations of superior quality. Another trend that I have observed is that people are more inclined to rating a product or service they dislike rather than the one they are satisfied with. When dissatisfied, customers avenge the service provider by giving them a poor rating. However, unless they are extremely satisfied with something, they are not motivated to report their ratings.
