Explanation / Answer

1. For this exercise I would like to discuss one of my favourite artist, Vincent Van Gogh’s painting that I had come across on my visit to the Amsterdam museum. The painting is titled “ the potato eaters” in which the Dutch artist has depicted a group of poor, hungry workers gathered around a dinner table to share their meal of boiled potatoes . The painting has been done on canvas using oil paints as the medium. Like the other Van Gogh paintings, the style of the painting is highly expressionist using thick and strong brushstrokes to depict the country scene of squalor and humility where the sadnesses and discredited on the faces of the hard working labourers appears too obviously and explicitly against the otherwise the background of a dimly lit room. The subtle play of light and dark regions on the canvas further elucidate the mood and the social context of the people and the artist’s persona itself. For me, the ‘Potato Eaters’ brings about the essence of the expressionist school of art and the socio-historical factors which led to its emergence.
