Media coverage of women's sports and female athletes highlight their appearance and sexuality rather than their athleticism.

How have sports traditionally contributed to the social construction of gender?

What does the sexualization of female athletes teach us about gender, power, and culture?

What stigma might female athletes face if they don't meet cultural expectations of gender?

Why do you think female athletes' appearances gets more attention than their athletic accomplishments? Can you think of a male athlete for which this is the case?

Find some updated examples of a female athlete in the media (representations in magazines, advertising, etc) and share what you found. Compare to current examples of male athletes you come across. What do you see?

Explanation / Answer

The sports is tradionally been seen as game of men rather than women. It is considered as more physical game and women are not considered that physical. Even if picture is changing these days men are still more dominant.

as far as the second question is concerned I believe that it is the culture which plays role for eg in western such picture are totally acceptable but in Indian culture, where the sports women are shown in sports dress only and not any sex object or any feminine charachter. There are some gender expectations as per culture such as at what age she should get married, what about her kids etc.

I guess they or people like us should not consider any stigma, we should not stereotype the, Hence I would not prefer to answer this question is a postive way. Let them be sportswomen as they are without concerning about what people are thinking. They should think about their aims and goals.

I read lot of sports related articles in the news paper, Today I see men and women are seen at paar, they are not differentiated such as having feminine charachter or body. If you go through soe bollywood movies like Dangsl, Mary Kom etc and even read about them it is usually show how they are pursuig their goals of olympics or any other such tournaments.
