Explanation / Answer
Tolstoy’s main character Ivan Ilych in the Death of Ivan Ilych is a classical work which brings the impacts of hypocritical and popular culture on every individual in the society. Most of the life styles, social norms and behaviours are different between the aristocratic or people who are in the upper deck of the social hierarchy and those below. The problem here is that people in the lower order of the society feel inferior in the way they live, thus trying to become like those in the upper deck by dressing, living, behaving and feeling like those in the higher level.
Ivan Ilych too marries a woman because according to the aristocratic rule a legal gentleman should take a wife which brings them more social recognition. He buys a big house and fill it with elite furniture thus trying to project himself as an aristocrat because aristocratic society stresses more on the materialistic living. He thus became obsessed with materials and started loving them and hate use people for his convenience. When his wife was pregnant he was not able to put up with the discomfort and started to come away from his family later. He thought he could find contentment and happiness in materialistic living and the hypocritical life style of the aristocrat but at the end he became lonely, dissatisfied and unhappy.
Today, the whole world is running towards materialistic possessions and love them more than the people. This has caused people to work like machines and forget that they are human beings. Their emotions, feelings and sense of belonging is shifting towards material and hypocritical living rather than in the values of sacrifice, loving and caring etc. At the end, this life style would lead one to unhappiness and loneliness.
