Question

1- Write an analysis and evaluation of the following article "Plastic pollution increases risk of devastating disease in corals"

by Dan GaristoWeek of January 25, 2018

More than 11 billion plastic objects are polluting Asia-Pacific coral reefs, a new estimate finds. This waste can harbor pathogenic bacteria known to make corals sick. Reefs littered with plastic were at least 20 times as likely to have diseased corals as unpolluted reefs, researchers say.

Corals succumbing to disease can throw ocean ecosystems out of whack. When corals die, they break down, robbing underwater organisms of their reef habitats. Based on current trends, the amount of plastic trapped in Asia-Pacific reefs is projected to increase 40 percent by 2025, further endangering corals, scientists report in the Jan. 26 Science.

Explanation / Answer

The plastic have emerged as a new danger for our environment, the amount of plastic garbage which is going into the sea is increasing day by day and there is no mechanism in place to check this. As per the case provided above it clearly states that its more than 11 Billion plastic objects which are into Asia-Pacific coral reefs, plastics were never environment friendly and that is why it has raised an alarm since long that the use of plastic should be reduced so that ultimately the dumping of plastic can be checked but this has not been as success yet.

We know that if there is no blue their can’t be green meaning if there is no water there are no trees and their can't be us. The dumping of plastic has increased recently and many reports have shown that the habitat of see is getting affected by it.

As per the case provided above, the main concern is of bacteria which can grow into these dumps and affect the overall existence of corals and its habitats. The reefs which are littered with plastic are 20% more polluted, the data present here is alarming. It can give birth to new diseases which prove to be dangerous for the humans.

More than 8 million tons of plastic is dumped into oceans every year and the dumping of plastic has been increasing since last 70 years, the problem of plastic pollution is persistent for the whole environment but when it goes into ocean it has more severe effects.

For our existence we need to have harmonious relationship we need to have harmonious relationship with our oceans but it is not the case, we have converted oceans into a dumping zone and we are doing so continuously.

The plastic dumped into oceans becomes a breeding ground for harmful microorganisms, sea animals even eat the plastic and the reefs are endangered by it. If not now then 10-20 years down the line this is going to become a problem for the existence of mankind, oceans have provided humans a lot of support since its existence to survive on this planet and playing with oceans will prove to be very harmful.
