Question

Many advocates of environmental ethics argue that human ethical concern should extend beyond human life to include nonhuman life and other aspects of the natural world. Humans, they argue, should see themselves as part of the natural world, intimately related to and dependent upon the environment in which they live, rather than seeing themselves at the center of the world. Andocentric views, they argue, wrongly lead people to think humans are “separate” from nature and therefore have a right to “dominion” over nature. First, describe some of the critiques environmental advocates make against anthropocentrism and dominion-over-nature ways of thinking. Next, explain how environmental advocates believe humans ought to think of themselves in relation to the environment in which they live. Finally, consider some practical ethical steps humans can take to live and act in ways that are more environmentally responsible and ethical.

Explanation / Answer

Anthropocentrism is the age old belief system about environment that value is human centred and that all other beings are means to human ends. It has been posed that this is highly unethical is the source of many ecological concerns and crisis. The belief that the universe is created in a way that humans are the fundamental beings in them leads to a lot of cruelty and biases against other coexisting beings in it. This is a potent argument stated by h=the critiques in this domain of work. Some practical ethical steps humans can take to live and act in ways that are more environmentally responsible and ethical are by acting in a more sensitized manner and avoiding causing brutality to other species. This includes avoiding practices like deforestation for commercial purposes, destroying the natural habitat of other beings and illegal killing, poaching of animals, especially the rare and endangered species This causes in imbalance in ecological system, causing distress to the environmentalists & must be catered to by adopting strict laws/policies that govern these themes. In this way, a lot of these concerns can be addressed and the distress caused to the environment can be avoided in order to create balance/equilibrium within the eco-system.
