Question
In The Hunger Games novel, Katniss volunteers for the Hunger Games because her sister is chosen and Katniss loves her deeply and wants to protect her. What are some ways that the filmmakers translate this love and protective instinct that Katniss has for Prim during the Reaping to the big screen?
The filmmakers show us a widescreen shot of the entire scene where we see everyone at once through the entire Reaping. There are no edited cuts to different characters and no close ups. We can sort of see Katniss and hear her yell that she'll volunteer. She doesn't look really terrified or upset, though, until she is up on the stage.
They don't have Katniss volunteer for Prim but instead have her be chosen and have Peeta volunteer for one of his siblings.
They use particular editing techniques, such as jumping back and forth between Prim being sent to the stage and a close up of Katniss's face, which shows us the look of horror she has.
They don't bother because they don't really feel Prim is important, so they leave her out of the film entirely.
