Building a Team

Team building is a group process intervention that “refers to a broad range of planned activities that help groups improve the way they accomplish tasks” (Cummings & Worley, 2005, p. 230).

Consider a team (e.g., department, work group, task force) in which you are currently participating or a team in which you formerly participated.

1. Identify the team and briefly describe its function.

2. Identify and briefly describe your role on the team.

3. Complete Part I: Problem Identification of the “Team Building Checklist” in your handouts folder (at START HERE).

4. Present your results for the exercise and your explanation of the results —e.g., if the score is low, which specific line items contributed to the low score; if the score is high, which specific line items contributed to the high score.

5. Make specific recommendations for leader behavior that would improve team functioning.

Explanation / Answer

1. I was previously part of a team for a game development project. The team was an amalgamation of the leaders and micromanagers from all the different departments, which knew the inner working, team dynamics and the purpose of each of the groups and was formed to supervise the process of the development cycle.

2. I acted as the manager of the visualization and storyboarding team and therefore, supervise their work and be able to communicate the schedule, errors and other factors with the managers of the other teams to allow this team to solve all the problems that hindered the production time and quality.

3. Team building is not an easy concept and has to follow set rules or guidelines which includes:-

A. OBJECTIVE: which means the reason that requires the formation of the team. In this case, the objective was to bring all the departments of the game development project together and allow the exchange of ideas and solve the problems of the project.

B. PURPOSE: which includes what needs to be done and how. In this case, the purpose was to solve all the problems that are encountered during the development process of the game.

C. BUDGET: which means that team building depends upon the function that it needs to achieve and how it will impact the finance of the organization. In this case, the team would allow the departments to work faster, have better communication and Coordination which essentially allows them to increase productivity and reduce wastage.

D. TIME: which means that the time is allotted to the teams based on the requirements. In this case, different team managers were given different schedule which will allow them to successfully interface their solution with the other and implementing the better functionality.

4. The team allowed the project to be completed on schedule. This would not have been possible if the departments were not allowed to integrate their purpose with that of the others. Even though the project deadlines were met, there were some aspects that were ineffective which was because of the mismanagement amongst the team leaders. The factor that allowed for a higher output was the proper differentiation of all the aspects, proper schedule division, communication and involvement which allowed all the departments to integrate with each other more efficiently. Making the team building process a success.
