Explanation / Answer
The likelihood of battling anxiety successfully would take around a month's time.
The behaviour plan would mainly focus on the following aspects:
1) Finding out the causes of anxiety
2) Changing unrealistic thoughts to more realistic ones
3) Facing anxiety-provoking situation in a gradual and manageable way.
The strengths of this behaviour plan:
1) The plan would not require medications which might have harmful side-effects.
2) The plan does not require any extra therapies and could be incorporated in daily living.
The weaknesses of this behaviour plan:
1) The result may take longer than expected.
2) The plan would focus on the manifested problem and would not really go deeper into it.
The hypothetical graph of target behaviour change:
1) The first week would be confronting the anxiety provoking situation from the past and reliving past memories of such situations. This would include feeling the thoughts, emotions and physical changes that took place during that situation.
2) In the second week, a mock environment of the anxiety provoking situation would be made at home. This is to give a realistic experience of the situation. If the situation causes anxiety it would soon be changed to normal. However, gradually the situation would be made acquainted with.
3) In the third week, a real but subtle anxiety provoking situation would be exposed to. The behaviour changes would be noted and gradual trial and error method would be followed. By the end of this week, subtle anxiety provoking situations should be dealt with.
4) Finally, in the fourth week the major anxiety provoking situation would be encountered gradually. Anytime, the physical changes takes place very rapidly, the situation would be withdrawn. However, it would be introduced again when ready. By the end of this week, the anxiety should be fought.
Treatment condition:
A mentor or therapist would be required in order to keep track of the progress in behaviour and in order keep up the motivation required.
