Question

We incarcerate a larger percentage of our population than almost any other country. Think about it; are we really likely to have a higher percentage of criminals in our country than any other country? We've seen a rise in for-profit prisons, a "war on drugs", an increase in the incarceration of people, especially people of color, stiffer sentences for people convicted of all crimes and a recession.

Use your critical think skills to discuss the connection between all of these variables. Do you think there is a connection? If so how are they connected and why? Justify your answers and use your references where appropriate.

(Remember to think about things like who profits and who loses with all of the things. Who is getting "locked up" and who is not? What are people being jailed for? What offenses have the highest rates of incarceration? Do you think there is a reason for this?)

Explanation / Answer

US has more people in prison than in a ny other country we are suffering a major human tragedy. We have more people in jail, including Communist China, an authoritarian country four times our size. The U.S. has less than five percent of the world’s population, yet we imprisson about a quarter of its prisoners — approx 2.2 million people.

there are many ways by which we can avoid or come up by this tragedy in that one of it is, end of profit prison.

first, let me tell you what profit prisons are:-

profit prisons are the place where individuals are physically confined by the third party who has the contract to do so by the countries government, for which the government pays these prisons either monthly or on per prissioners.

Some U.S. states have imposed bans, population limits, and strict operational guidelines on private prisons:

PEOPLE WITH COLOR BEING INCARCERATED MORE

The prison crisis has more harmed minorities. If current trends persist, one in four black males born today can expect to be incarcerated during their lifetime. also, 69 percent of African-American men who drop out of high school will end up in jail.

Profiling is the starting place for this disparate treatment. Blacks and Latinos are also more likely to be charged, tried and convicted than their White counterparts for the same offenses. And money is perhaps the crucial factor in determining whether you get adequate legal help.

Worst of all, the for-profit system is having a terrible impact on our young people. A Huffington Post report entitled “Prisoners of Profit,” paints a vivid picture of the widespread abuse and brutality, including fatal medical neglect and sexual abuse. In the “kids for cash“ scandal, business people actually paid judges to send young people to their often-brutal facilities, often for very minor infractions.

WHY DO PEOPLE GET ARRESTED AND MOST COMMON OFFENCES IN US

Most of the arrests are drug and intoxication arrests.people get intoxicated and cause disturbance to the system hence the Cops get called. Cops tell drunk to keep the noise down because they are bothering neighbors. Drunk agrees to go sleep it off. Problem solved? If when the cops show up, someone claims to have been physically assaulted, it becomes a mandatory arrest situation, one or both people go to jail as soon as the accusations are made.

In the first scenario, officially the person is arrested for disturbing the neighbors, that is the charge. The real issue is his/her intoxication on alcohol or other drugs. Now if they are in public, they can be charged with public intoxication.
