Explanation / Answer
sheriff conducted an experiment on the basis of the autokinetic which says that an unmoving light seems to be moving in a dark room. sheriff did this to understand the concept of conformity. the primary effect when the people were left alone in the room and asked about the distance for which the light travelled seemed to be 2- 6 inches but they were left there in groups of 2-3 people they compromised to 4 inches. hence, the level of conformity is high
asch conducted an experiment to study the extent of change after pressure from amjority group is applied. 50 male students were participating in the line judgement task. 7 confederates and a naive individual were left in a room. the reponse of confederates was predecided to which the naive was unknown.they were asked to say it aloud as to which line is same as the target line. the naive gave his answer in the end.the confederates gave wrong answers in 12 out of 18 trials. a control group had only real participants and no confederates for comparison. the primary effect was only 1% wrong answers in the control group. level of conformity was such that one thirds of the participants conformed. in the 12 trials 75% particpants conformed atleast once and 25% never. hence level of conformity was high
