I think Zimbardo said this because he wanted his prison experiment to reflect the reality of prisoners and guards’ behavior in a real prison. He did not want the participants to feel like being a part of the study, but a part of the real prison situation. He wanted them to play the actual assigned social roles.

In my opinion too, it was not an ethical way to gather information. Such an experiment could instead be an observational study in the real prison. As the participants knew their roles and the way their roles had to behave, the results of the experiment were predictable. That makes it a biased study.
