Homosexuality removed from DSM
After intense debate, the American Psychiatric Association removes homosexuality from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The widely used reference manual is revised to state that sexual orientation "does not necessarily constitute a psychiatric disorder."
This was the most surprising to me. I was born in 1971. It surprised me that we are now in 2018 and even though we have come a long way on this issue there are still people in this world that believe that if someone is homosexual there is something wrong with them. I had no idea that it has been 45 years since the APA removed as psychiatric disorder. I honesty did not know that this was considered a psychiatric disorder. This was very interesting to me. I guess like any racism it will take a long time for everyone to understand that we as a people are all different and that is OK. We all have the same red blood running through our veins and the color of our skin or our sexual orientation does not change that we are all human and should be treated with dignity and respect.
I think for this event sexual orientation should not have an effect on whether someone is used in a study or not. Whether you are studying individuals, groups or different cultures it would be important to include all in the study even those that have different sexual orientations.

Explanation / Answer
Homosexuality has been in practice in most of the cultures of the ancient world, and it was an accepted norm in these societies. The prominent cultures where homosexuality was openely accepted and practised were Greek and Japanese cultures, though ,the Greek society society permitted only men to have homosexual relationship. Thus, in ancient times homosexuality was a common practice, and was not considered as a deviant behavior. It was under the influence of Abrahamic religions particularly during the middle ages, that homosexuality was considered as a sin and a deviant behavior. Still those Muslim countries where religion is practised vigorously considers it to be a sin and even death penality is allotted to those who practice homosexuality. Changes in attitude toward this sexual orientation began with the advent of Renaissance in Europe and the many research regarding the sexual behavior of human behavior during the late 19th century and 20th century brought about a lot of change in the perspective of western societies towards the various sexual orientations. The term "homosexuality" was coined during the late 19th century and the sexual revolution in the European and American societies in the beginning of 20th century made homosexuality and other forms of sexual orientations to be acceptable in these societies. Thus, people in the European and American societies that placed high value to human rights and democratic concepts began to respect individual's sexual orientation and no longer consider them to be deviant.
