RE: Sect. 1 Week 13 DQ 11: House Bill 54

(4) House Bill 54: "An Act providing an end-of-life option for terminally ill individuals; and providing for an effective date."

(4a) My position on House Bill 54: I support the bill as written.

(4b) My reasoning for supporting this bill is because the attending physician is required to continually ask the capable individual if they would like to rescind their request for medication at the second oral request (and each request has to be made in person by some means or another if not able to speak) and thoroughly has evaluated the indications for why the capable individual can receive the medication. Brock supports physician assisted suicide and voluntary euthanasia because the value of the capable individual well-being and autonomy. In addition, Brock would agree that assisted suicide allows the patient to regain control of their life because in terminal illness the person will lose control of their bodily functions and psyche.

(4c) An objection to my position and supporting argument likely to be put forward by Oderberg is that assisted suicide or voluntary euthanasia would be wrong because letting someone die is just as wrong as assisting in their death.

(4d) Legislators who may be voting on this bill should consider that every individual (who is capable) has a right to life and not to exist in suffering when death is eminent. The bill is written to support that the patient continues to offer other options for the patient including comfortable life support, pain management and hospice, should the terminally ill patient change their mind. It is not a one step process. Many requirements must take place, including counseling screening and the capable individual is given many opportunities to change their mind.

Explanation / Answer

I, too, support the bill as it is written. I believe that every individual should possess the right to die with dignity and be empowered to make end-of-life decisions that choose how much suffering they should endure. Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act, which has been empirically demonstrated to have safeguards to protect patients and prevent misuse, is a clear example of how physician-assisted suicide and voluntary euthanasia can give patients control and peace of mind during their final days. Furthermore, the protections in the act ensure that patient consent is prioritized.
