Question

Roman Catholics recite the Nicene Creed each time the community gathers for Eucharist on Sundays and Holy Days. The Creed contains statements of belief that represent Christian Theology in the first few centuries of the faith.

As Christianity spread throughout the Roman Empire, varying interpretations began to set one Christian community against another as theological disagreements and heresies began to develop. The Nicene Creed is the result of centuries of theological reflection and discernment that began within a generation after Christ's death and continued for several centuries. The Creed itself represents the fruits of the first two major councils of the church, Nicaea (325 CE) and Constantinople I (381 CE)

Choose a phrase in the Creed and research its theological meaning

Explanation / Answer

‘He suffered, was crucified, was buried, rose again on the third day, ascended into heaven with the same body, [and] sat at the right hand of the Father’.

Christianity is based in these lines that Jesus Christ came for the mankind in order to relive them from their sins. He suffered for them thus carrying the entire load of sins on his shoulders; he was crucified and died on the cross. The best part of the story is the resurrection which formed the afterlife belief of the Christians. They believe that Jesus is seated at the right hand of God and judge people according to their deeds.
