Question
The information processing model refers to a channel of communication divided in 4 steps. What are those 4 steps? How can we understand memory based on that model?
I think the 4 steps might be this (but I am not sure):
1) Encoding (sensory/short-term memory)
2) Storage (short-term/long-term memory)
3) Programming (control processes)
4) Retrieval (what the person says or does)
But I am not sure :( and I am also not sure what should I answer on "How can we understand memory based on that model?"
So if you can help me to answer the whole answer I will really appreciate it! thanks!
Explanation / Answer
According to cognitive psychologists, the human brain is compared to that of a computer. Information is gathered and stored into the memory in a series of stages: input, storage and output. A stimulus is selected from our environment and this is called encoding. This stage is known as input. Once an input is gathered, it is analysed and stored into our short term memory first. This is called storage. The information stored in the short term memory decays soon. In order to move this information to the long term memory, a process called rehearsal or revision is made The programming process of what should be stored permanently requires attention to the stimuli e.g. physical appearance, colour, shape, etc. Once this is done, information goes to the long term memory and one is able to retrieve the information. This permanent information is what we understand by the term "memory'.
