Question
Hello! This is a project that I have and I am confused as to what a good subject matter would be for the paper. I was wondering if you could think of any good examples that I could use as the base for my paper. Thank you!
My Professor also said that we could relate it to ethical problems in our career field and my future field is Human Resources.
The Case:
• You will find a specific ethical case/article/issue where there is more than one legitimate side to the issue. The case must have legitimate ethical standing on each side. In other words, the only reason to be for/against it must not be merely economic. If the case is inherently one-sided, you will receive a 30 point deduction on the grade. Ask yourself, “Is this a situation where there is really only one “good” outcome?”
• Don’t make it too broad. Ex: gun control. What specific law are you going to look at?
• The most current information on the case cannot be more than 6 months old. You can find the case in newspapers, magazines or online news sources. You will be asked to choose a topic early in the semester.
• The case cannot cover a topic which we cover in class. Please see the course syllabus or schedule for a detailed list of topics we are covering. Just to be clear, if you do your presentation on a topic we cover in class, you will receive a 0.
The Theories: You must choose two of the following theories: Consequentialism (name which type), Natural Law Theory (NLT is required, DDE is optional), Kantian Moral Theory (both H and UL), Rights-based Moral Theory, Virtue Ethics (List and discuss the virtue(s)), Ethics of Prima Facie Duty (list and discuss the duties), or Social Contract Theory. Put each theory’s definition on a separate slide from the application and the other theories. One theory must be “pro” and the other “con.” Present the theory (describe it in detail), and then discuss how the case is evaluated based on the theory’s criteria. Show the steps you used to evaluate the case. Each theory must have a definite outcome for the case. In other words, it approves or disapproves of the question. At least one of the theories must disapprove and one approve. In other words, two can say no and one says yes, or two say yes and one says no. If you are having trouble backing up both sides, it is probably not a good case to use. There will be two sections on this. Your (or your group’s) view: You will then say what your group believes is the best moral view (pro/con) of the case and which theory you base this view on.
Don’t choose a topic that we cover in any way in the course.
Hate speech and racism
Immigration
Abortion
Contraception
Euthanasia
Dr. assisted suicide
Terrorism
Torture
World poverty
Don’t choose any of the following topics: (they have been way over-done)
The legalization of marijuana for medical use
The legalization of marijuana for recreational use
Anything related to the death penalty
HB2
Same-sex marriage
